Don’t wait for benchmark candidates – as soon as you see a strong CV, arrange to see the candidate. Do not wait for other candidates to ‘benchmark’ against. In today’s job market you will be lucky to get 1 or 2 really strong candidates for your vacancy.
Consider Telephone or Skype. If you have a good CV, arrange to speak to them as soon as possible so that you can engage them in your opportunity and business. If arranging a face to face interview is going to take a while, start with a telephone or Skype interview.
‘Sell’ your opportunity. With numerous job options open to them, good candidates will need to be sold the benefits of a job. Try and give them the wider picture on your business and talk about longer term career opportunities as well as the job being offered.
Make a strong offer. It goes without saying that in a job market that is moving fast, salaries are also on the rise. You may very well need to offer an external candidate more than an outgoing candidate to fill a vacancy.
Keep line managers informed. If you work in HR you will probably be very aware of these points, however your line managers may not. Make sure you explain to all line managers who will be involved in an interview process are aware of the current job market and how to secure the right candidates.
