To celebrate ‘Drive it Day’ Copeland were at races again this weekend. The headline race of the ‘Formula Vintage Meeting’ at Silverstone included an impressive grid of Pre 1961 Grand Prix cars.
Amongst the Maserati, Cooper and Lotus Grand Prix cars was Anthony Best’s 2.5 litre 1960 Ferrari 246 F1. This car represents a last ‘swansong’ for the great front-engine Grand Prix cars. After 1960 ‘rear- engined’ cars from Cooper, Lotus, Brabham and BRM dominated. The technical advance meant that Ferrari had to quickly ‘play catch up’ with their own rear engine design.
