A 1897 Daimler was spied at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb this weekend. This is the car that started UK motor car production. Built in Coventry in 1897 using German Daimler patents, the ‘Coventry’ Daimler was part of a first-year production of just 70 cars – 120 years later Jaguar Land Rover’s three plants produced 544,401 cars in 2016.
The single cylinder car has ‘tiller’ steering and solid carriage like wheels and was first owned by Arthur Mulliner the famous coachbuilder. The Daimler was heard running at Shelsley Walsh but did not tackle the steep hill at speed!
