6 Hours of Silverstone
The World Endurance Championship, 6 hours of Silverstone billed as “Spirit of Le Mans” came to the UK this weekend.
For those who can’t afford (time or health) the week long ‘stag party’ in France in June, we recommend Silverstone on Easter Sunday. 6 hours racing is 3 times longer than the current F1 ‘sprints’ but the organisers go out of their way to encourage fans with an ‘access all areas’ attitude.
For the price of the entry ticket you can meet the drivers, including Nelson Piquet (JR), Bruno Senna, Nicholas Prost, Mathias Lauda and lastly Mick Schumacher (in the supporting European F3 race). You can also roam the track and stands ‘at will’ to search out the best vantage points.
This year, Toyota took the lead from Porsche with less than 15 minutes to go. In the GTam class it was even closer, with the lead Ferrari crashing out on the last but one corner at Stowe to allow the Aston Martin and Porsche GT cars through.
A word of advice – endurance racing requires strategic planning, so take a radio, dress for the Arctic and wear sun block!
